The Passionate Affair of Lady Nelson

Lady Nelson, the wife of Lord Horatio Nelson has been deserted by her husband and finds herself alone and unprotected in Blackheath where she is a guest of the Princess of Wales, Caroline of Brunswick. Caroline has been banished to Blackheath by the Prince of Wales, having reunited with his first wife, the beautiful Catholic Mrs Fitzherbert. Lady Nelson attends the New Year’s Ball hosted by the Princess of Wales at Heath House where she meets once again the mesmeric and magnetic Monsieur de Talleyrand, Prince and diplomat, Napoleon’s spymaster, the enigmatic French Foreign Minister. Lady Nelson is mesmerized by his Gallic charm, his handsome looks, his wit and intelligence. She falls in love and is drawn to him unwillingly as still in love with her husband, the cold and errant Horatio Lord Nelson. The Napoleonic War is the backdrop to the drama that unfolds on the wintry heath in London. The stage is the snow covered heath with the grand Georgian houses of the gentry surrounding it. The drama is played out in the conversation at the tea tables…gossip about the Prince of Wales and Mrs Fitzherbert and the scandalous goings on at Heath House where Caroline entertains her many lovers…politicians and officers all vying for her favours. With the political conflict of the Napoleonic War as the backdrop of the story, the internal conflict of Lady Nelson and Talleyrand is played out. This conflict almost drives Lady Nelson to the brink of madness where reality and fantasy become blurred in her mind.
