Early this morning, a spokesman for Kofi Annan announced that Syria had accepted Annan’s peace plan to end strife in Syria.  That promising news, however, has been eclipsed by reports that clashes between Syrian troops and Syrian rebels have spilled into Lebanon.

Twitter reaction:

#Assad: "I promise will implement the #Syria peace plan – as soon as I have finished invading #Lebanon."

It seems Anan's Syria grand plan failed to mention that Assad's forces are not allowed to take their game elsewhere. #Lebanon

Spokesman for UN envoy Kofi Annan says Syria has accepted his peace plan. Really? So why is there fighting along Lebanon border? #UNfail

At least one Twitter user who claims to be on the ground near the clashes is disputing media reports of an incursion into Lebanese territory:

We r in mashari3 alqa3 #syrian #borders as usual reuters is bbluffing in general.the banging is inside #syria.nothing on #lebanon side
