Not necessarily.

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform agrees to hold hearing on NFL policies at request of Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.).

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) explains that Committee on Oversight and Government Reform chair Darrell Issa and ranking member Elijah Cummings have agreed to hold a hearing on the NFL at her request.

.@OversightDems agrees to hold hearing on @nfl after my request. Press Release: http://t.co/2ZG7cIdDSL #NFL

— Jackie Speier (@RepSpeier) September 11, 2014

In a press release, Speier says that the committee will investigate not only the Ray Rice domestic violence situation but also “the League’s tolerance of performance enhancing drugs, the impact of traumatic brain injury on players later in life, and the tax-exempt status the NFL enjoys thanks to a loophole congress created in the ‘60s.”

Good idea?

@MarkMaske Didn't know that NFL is part of government. Next time you hear a Dem complain about wasting $ on hearings, remind them of this.

@MarkMaske What a waste of tax payer $! Smh

The government’s involvement doesn’t end there. A bipartisan group of 16 female senators has sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell Thursday asking for the NFL to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against domestic violence.

@darrenrovell isn't there more important things for our government to be doing right now other than policing the NFL?

— Patty Mills (@mpz34) September 11, 2014

@RavensInsider COME ON!! I think the NFL should be at the bottom of the pile of paperwork our government should be worrying about

@DomZenga to say the least

Update: Becca Watkins, Communications Director for House Oversight Committee Chairman Issa, clarified that Rep. Issa has not agreed to a hearing:

“Chairman Issa had separate conversations today with both Rep. Speier and Ranking Member Cummings about potential pathways for continuing the committee’s oversight of ongoing issues in the National Football League.  Reports of a decision or agreement to hold a hearing are inaccurate.”
