Dan and Bonnie Blackledge Canola Growing and Processing Farmers Forum Presentation 2014

you I’ll get this started so this is a one Hour Workshop Think You’ve All the Time the Junior I Just want to find you with the Sarah Program I’m one of the State for new Times for the Stator Program and This is Supported Preparation Workshops The Outlet of The Project They, did and Grant Cycle Starts from Labor to A light Nuclear um First of them[ About] seven Thousand Dollars in Grants Level if You present Three Farmers Together you get up to twenty Two thousand Dollars So, we Can facilitate Them out and our Website this ar e dot 0 RG and this Is Just one Table to about bach you Know How that helps Give an Idea Started Take some Risk apart to Get it Off and Running So that’s A hefty and Bonnie Black Buttons Here Talking About the Canola Oil and all the food aspects of it ok, thanks Down And Just to time to Start out We got a sare grant in oh? Let’s See i think it was About December January Maybe 2011 Probably Harbach January Two Thousand Eleven for seven Thousand Dollars Like cowan Said and um you know We we probably Would have done what you’re Going to see here Today Anyway it Would have taken Us a lot longer A little bit more Work Would have been you know it really Would ought to have A quantity, Tougher Force We got the grant, We were able to move it Fairly Quickly With it? And I have to tell you if You’ve Never Applied for a award this is A grant you Ought to go for It’s like 10 Pages Long Maybe Anybody Can sit[ Down] and write it out the Questions are Common smell Questions You don’t need to get a Dictionary out to do it and so it’s just what a great Grand for Us and we were Lucky you got it so I Don’t know what the Competition Is but It’s been A great award well Kind of at the Beginning of what we’re of what? We’re we’re Going to talk about here um We Started Growing Canola on in Kind of a project with Michigan State University We’re Looking for Somebody broken all over oil for one of Their biofuels Projects and We Started out With that and That Kind of went by the Wayside, we deterred Growing Canola and What we Discovered Is that, We were Sending our Canola To a processor over in Canada in Windsor Canada? and Then They were Processing It and Sending all of the Oil and all the meal back to michigan in Bonaire Just Kind of Scratching our Heads what Time you know Saying This Formula Didn’t Seem Quite right here is or is There Any Way to Make This a better Process and so that’s how We started Talking About Pressing our Own Oil but it was Kind of a downwards style of Approaching and I repute but that’s How We started out so? That was the description you have to come up with the Project Description for your gift and This was the one That? We had on our Grant Application Probably the key Thing There Is since Then? We look at the ValueAdded aspects of that what do, We do that Can Have value Added to it you are aware so Further Farm We’re Located in Marion Michigan so Michigan as you know it Shaped Like A mitten and Marian’s Just kind of Right in The Center of the State Farm Them Family for a Hundred Years With Dairy farm to start out With and We’ve Grown Various Crops on it Today We’ve Got About 115 Acres of Canola on About 115 Acres of Wheat We do a spin with them and then the rest is Alfalfa and some Grazing Land for Cattle There’s The Wheat and Canola Canola Result up you Know Beautiful Fields of Yellow As far as “youre seeing” in Our get one Month came 70 Acres and It’s quite a sight to look at right Around the first of july Kluger Doesn’t Work Just Keep Going Backward One of the things that We Have personified? Was about the last? You know Five to ten Years is Really looking at Sustainable Farming all from from A grower Standpoint how do how, do we do as effectively as Possible Work with The Land and Work With our Crops? With Minimum Disruption to the Natural Cycle of Things and so as a logical Propagation of that We started NoTill Farming Last year With 40 Acres of no tell, we, did Some Test Plots of Cover Crops last-place Decreased the Way Neither you, don’t want to which did very well and everybody’s With Telling us you know Take five to ten Years to get Into Hotel and Year One Was uh I would say it was Maybe not a Disaster but Pretty Close to it We’re Coming Back This year Going to try it again you are aware, we learned some Things But, We were Longtime Cooperated with the grime Conservation? District and Michigan’s Got A Certification Program Called the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program Voluntary But Farmers Can do This and it they Come out the government Comes out and helps you Look at how, you’re Handling Fuel Look at how, you’re Handling chemicals Look at how, you’re Handling Water Runoff Water off your fields and Off your Farms then you know all Those Different Areas and so[ We] look at Certified With that the outpouring? And here’s How, We started out Growing Canole in 2008 Which? Was our first Time Really of I would Say you know Focus Can all Canola Drawing? We started out With 20 Acres and Then each Year We’ve Just Increased up to About 115 Acres? So that’s all I’Ll have this Time About 115 and Each Step of the acces what we’ve Been able to do is learn a little more About it We started out Here With Zero Knowledge And we learn a little more About it and Just kind of Grow as, We get Smarter We’re Growing our Oil Business Exactly the Same Way start now Small and Just Growing and Learning and Growing so As i mentioned, We we’ve done some Work with msu over the Years? and Today There’s Almost no Canola Drill in Michigan[ and] so we’ve Kind of learned Along With, Msu some of the Extension People There we changed during To A food market in 2009 and One of the things We tried to do is Involve other Farmers in The Process now we’ve got? Gosh I we’ve Probably Had Four or five raise fills? Some Winter finds and Some summer Field day like The one You envision up here Today I foresee They’re Strolling, One of The Person Michigan girl and Can all up so We haven’t Been very good Evangelist for it I get it we “re trying”? To Market[ North ], was too hot It was it was that Shipped over to Canada to for Processing I foresee the Processing part Way Yeah the Situation in Michigan From what I understand was Back in The 90 s There were various Farmers Grow in Canola but it was all Ship to Canada for Processing and Farmers all Migrated Back Towards Corn and Soybeans and Wheat so an Apolar it is today Especially, over the last couple Time High Corn, Soybean Rate Maybe you want to Just Talk a little bit About what Kind of Circumstance Seem to Favor Growing to nola for Those That might be interested in um You know, hi, oh you Probably want to look at.Winter canola, we’re Going spring Canola Where we’re at and Central Michigan Winter Canola will Yield a bit More[ you’ve] Got the Same Situation With it you’ve Got With Wheat and that’s Winter kill and Potential dear Problems over Winter honey Love Canola[ Little] Travel Right Through Cornfields Are Soaking Feels to get the Canola Fields But Outside of that you[ know] Grown that Was similar to Grow and Any other Field Crop What I use is I Use an older John Deere Drill I kept the Canola Seed in The cedar carton on it and so it Comes out and Drops on Top of the foot Behind the Drill and Then I made A colour Packer Behind and That Battalion it in So my Process is about as Simple as you know as you can get And i[ head] on Hand you know the drill and the colouring Packers so I have to Buy Any brand-new gear to make love so It’s always a Bonus now we’re Looking Into a noTill drill Which is going to be a little Different Process Yeah yep, we’re Talking get Many Thousands of Dollars We’re Looking at it and it’s about as far as.We got what’s your soil ah? We[ come] the glacial Till so it varies from Pretty Heavy Clay all the way to ignites and um Rolling Gently Rolling you know Notnot hilly by any Mean Gently Rolling Canola Likes Cool Weather Canola Does not like A quantity of Water so you know it’s It’s one of Those Crops We try and get it Planted Around the Middle to the latter Part of April Last Year We had a, tremendously Wet spring in Michigan I couldn’t even Start Planning Till may eight so? Very Late and I pasture Suffered Greatly Because of it what happened the Main Reason for that is that Canola Love to Grow and Flower in Cool Weather and I know when, We get Into, july We’re Going to start Having sizzling Weather for the flowers to Appear and Hot Weather will smash Those Blossoms to get a little Because over About 85 stages and You get a little you’ll Start Losing BlossoMs Just Because of the Heat So, we try to Plan it Early, We can get on the Ground? So we’ll run Through Some things that we’ve learned what’s up with the Project With the Sarah Project One of the things We Found out Early on is you got to get Canola Seed real baked? Nobody in Michigan Can cool the Seat that I’ll Pass this Around this Is a little Container See some of you might not know What Canola Seed Looks Like Feel free to open That Up and Looks like Alfalfa Seed real Small So grain Dryers in Michigan not on Can Handle it’s Just too small to See to go Through that Corn you can Get by With With what Thirteen Fourteen Percent Moisture Canola You get much over ten Percent ten a half Percent you’re in the hurt so the first Thing We certainly Had to deal With Is how do We get Canola Seed down to that That dry and you must Gotta Wait Till about one O’Clock in the Afternoon and You want as Long a Days as Possible so again by Planning Early in The outpouring I can Get my Canola to Ripen the last Part of August When I still came Fairly Long Days in Fairly Clear weather yet And so, we can get it done get it done seven Percent before you Know We heard A copter Comment on eleven Percent and by six O’Clock seven O’Clock in The Afternoon you’ve Got it downtown you are aware? Seven eight Percent Other Thing, We have sought to do With Somebody broken all A time after Year? And we Noticed that in A second year our? Yields Were Lower Than They were on the first Time and the Third Year They’re lower more So i started doing the Research and Found up sure Enough you know They don’t recommend Can all it two years in A row.So right now, we’re Doing A, canola Weed Rotation It Fits, well With our Rotation on the Land and also Canola is a Broadleaf a Brassica Wheat is A grass until you Break the Insect and Disease Cycle so so far a good luck doing that the only Thing We might do With Rotation is go to a threeYear Rotation find One More Crop to go in There and so We guess you got a reserve you, we germinate Canola? and Of Course Marketing, We Could hear Nobody in Michigan to? Depress it and I wasted a good deal Of Time I was on the Phone A heap trying to find someone to Press Canola because There’s some Soybean Pressors in Michigan They don’t Overdo Canola, they will not shut Their plant down to do Canola and So, we we Finally Bought our Press to do it Ourselves and then, We have a lot of Excess that, We Ship over to? AdM and Windsor Just Call a truck to come in all over There, okay? Got an Egg, Oil Press built in Wisconsin You See a Picture of it now a bit While If I were to do it again I would Make a real Serious Look at the german Process One of the Intellects Being is the united Regime is on a soybean Standard you know so all the presses and Processes and Everything now Based on Soybeans Germans are on A canola Rapeseed Standard and so Everything’s a little bit Different over There and Canada’s Rapidly Swinging Towards Canola too so the majority of members of my Canola Information Actually Comes out of Canada So back to the y Canola Thing Instead of doing Soybeans Or One of the Oilseed Crops One of the Reasonableness was Because? Canola is Simply A very Healthy oil and So Funny and I talked about it for you if we’re Going to be Growing an Oilseed Crop let’s See if We Can Originate the Healthiest One There Is and so I Don’t know if You Can Make this out unusually Well Or not but on this Top line here Is Canola Oil Only Seven Percent Saturated overweight so very low Saturated fat Content and you Can Ogle at the other Oils now some Soybean Oils Fifteen Percent for Example and olive Oil Is fifteen Percent so they’re higher in The Saturated overweight Content um Canola Oil He’s got Twenty one Percent Poly Unsaturated and Actually These Two here the 21 and 11 are all Polyunsaturated and at 61 Percent Monounsaturated Or Omega 9 Oil So you get Ninety Three percent of the Healthy Oils in Canola and Only seven Percent Of what We would Call Unhealthy Oil and Canola so in Some being a healthful, well for Us? And I do Have more Information in fact I’ll pass this Around to This is A note Chart laid out Pretty Similarly but it Breaks it Down a little More Closely and Anybody wants to know more About Fatty Acids and so on I’m happy to do Bucky Afterwards and we Can Talk about You Know, What Fatty Acid Contents Are and How that relates to the Omegas and so on Coconuts Three Dead it Looks That Way um So in Our Research after Growing Canola for a duet Years We Discovered that There, was a brand-new Curtain Canola Variety out Called A mega nine Canola and so we investigated that Fondant, We are also able get the Seed and That’s an Even Healthier Oil hitherto Still got the seven percent Centre de Fat Content but “youre seeing” the Monounsaturated Fat Content departed Up to SeventyTwo Percent so We we now Grow all Omega9 Canola and? We now Grow all Non Gmo canola so we’ve converted a raise? Wholly Over To That Standard Now Okay, okay, Ligaments going to go Through the goals for the Project so Lily firstly We applied for The grant Head Come up with some Points and so our first purpose Was to Use A mechanical press to extract the lubricant from 1,500 Pounds of Omega Dying Canola Seed and I was going to change that last Night never did how Countless Bushels of That You Remember 40 About 40 Bushels so if you Keep that in Mind you’ll realize where we’re at Now but That’s Where our original Idea was and So we Purchased the Oilseed Crop and We did A quantity of? Research on that We Found This A curl Press and “youre seeing” it in the Picture and we when We run its Face At an Incubator Kitchen in Michigan I don’t know if They have Those you know how[ i’m] sure They, do? And it’s actually was Through All of our Work that we’ve Done it was Really Through Michigan State University They facilitated Us? Everywhere Every Place, Along the channel so, we Were working with Their Product Center and They Actually have a Hand in the Incubator Kitchen that We were at and They Really helped us get going but We you can See how you know We kind of? JerryRigged This Together is you know we’ve got? The Oil Collecting in This Sure and you know our dinner rallying Here and We[ have] things Piled up to Make Sure We could introduce the? Picture on you know Collect that Oil and so that was our basic let’s get Started It’s a little Funnel up on Top, We has spoken about A goblet of Canola Seed in me Time[ Running] Through so Yeah but hey, We were Producing oil nasa, We are also able Produce about a gallon an Hour and you know Somebody Asked us Earlier About Regulations and We Had to be Licensed by em Guard and I have to wear the little Bonnets and the gloves and the whole deal so you know, you’re not[ the] most Flattering Picture but It precisely gives you new ideas, We had to meet Their criteria and in Order to get Licensed even Though We were exploiting a, licensed Kitchen our Process Had to be Licensed it Actually, wasn’t that Hard Because We did our Homework ahead of Time so? If you’re[ Thinking] of doing Anything Where you’re Adding Value to a commodity and you’re not for business expend Obviously do your Homework Ahead of Time Because we’ve Talked to we’ve got We get our License on the first Try A bunch of[ Parties] that We talked to Said? you Know They[ Didn’t] and They only told okay you got to change this this and This and Then They Change it and then There Was like A duo more things that They Didn’t do so they had to go Through Their Inspection Like Three Or four Times you’ve Really got, License so if you do your Homework upfront and Found out iT’s a lot Easier So Anyway our second objective,[ was] to refine the Canola Oil to Commercially Accepted stand Acceptable Standards When, We first Started We Thought of using doing like a a refined oil like you Would find on the Shelves in Typical Grocery Store Then We the more We made About it We Decided Instead of Trying to refine all the good stuff out of our Oil? We “il be going” the more Natural Route and so the Oil We Press as you can See as a more Golden Color Than what you Can find in Most Grocery Supermarket Because it’s We Decide Not to bleach it Early fine, ah if you’d like the test Let me Know Could We have some samples Here more yeah if You exclusively want to smell it that’s okay? I feel like he’s got a little extra leave But you don’t have to Drink it or Anything but Just Seems Just Take your Finger and you might want to try it So we found that our? Process then Became, We guided it Through the Press We make it Settle for A duo Weeks and then we’d skin the lubricant off the Top and? We found that[ we ]? Did Some Tests Sampling Mostly to friends and relatives To encounter what they Thought that and Most of them liked it There, were Some that Didn’t they Thought this smell and the flavor was a little Strong I perceived it was Interesting I extended To A? Presentation Earlier Today and They Talked About the Millennial Generation Which Ensure I make 18 To 34 year Age-olds and We find it Really I my Kids are all Like in The Early 30 s and so our Dance older Girls and They[ adored] it and We Found that my son Well we’ll Get to that Last-minute but Time with my son Lee but so Anyway that was our Second Goal? Our Third goal, was to Bottle the oil in One Quart Plastic Bottle but We Found People that Buy Natural? Commodities don’t like Plastic so we Decided to go with Glass Bottles and We concluded Them if We Consider our Specialty Oil and? Because it is ColdPressed is NonGmo so it’s Different than the quant that nature you’re Going to Buy in the Grocery Accumulation so We observed the death of The Pint Bottle size was a better to Market was better to Market in it I? Planned A heap of this Advice Came from the Michigan State Product Center I’m Sure are you affiliated With I university in Ohio Which is Which University Ohio State We’re Kind of Challengers aren’t we? But A bit more We took Care of that karen, ass but Anyway good much You so if They Have Helped There if you need it We got yes? Okay, so um Anyway so we varied and went to Glass and[ jug][ Sized][ I’ll] pass it on one of our Bottles of lubricant you can see what it looks like in With the other One[ Another] goal Were set to layout A, name that Incorporates Grow Locally and Healthy Oil Information We Actually came our Nutrition realities Through? Msu they Helped us with that Nutrition part of it I love the Parts Canola Oil Because There’s One Ingredient and that’s the big Thing now is you know the little Additives The Better, We don’t Have Any Additives So we’ve got the label devised by A heap of Dance Daughters I actually made the Canola Picture and The Little One of our Silo on our Farm and it’s so Funny to See and I Keep Arguing About The Silo it’s an Old One it’s no good for Anything Anymore Really and it’s by a kind of A Dilapidated Structure and he Says,[ well] Now that it’s on our Label, We can’t get Rid of it? So I yes Because I really Think it Includes Character So we’ve got our Website on There we’ve got a new Pc We include last-minute we obtained a lot of accumulates wine-colored i tol a produce system on it And we Added Just There Last, Edition was the? Qr.Code so you Can Search that if You have a Qr code Scanner on your Phone and And so insure why our Oil Is unique Because we Figured We were going to do A net name and then we thought you Know It’s to tell People because if They See it on the Shelf you know why Should you buy[ our] Oil Instead of Somebody Else’s and So now what we, did Is use[ the] Qr Code so that People Could Scan that and it Makes Them to a part of our[ Website] where Explains why our Oil? Is that so? Next Goal 5, was to TestMarket to three Small Food Processors Originally we reflected? Well We knew Some People that were Producing granola, We knew some People that? Were forming some kind of a Potato Chip We judge Let’s Try to sell it to People that Our key Code will use it for a commodity in Making and then We found out that, We went to A networking? We had Just Get License the Week before the Conference and then, We went to obliging it[ Michigan] Conference in? 2011 and That was like, We were Thrown Into This? Huge Room Full of All These People attaining Michigan Products and We Found that our Real niche Would be? Wholesale Sales Because That’s all the interest in our oil Seemed to come from stores that Wanted to Carry it And so we’ve Changed our Focus again and We Decided to sell more as? A wholesaler to retail Markets and Since 2011 We’ve Expanded our Wholesale We tried[ to] do a little bit[ I] operate[ FullTime ]? in Addition To trying to do this Business and I am Ought to be the Marketer of the Group and So I don’t have a lot, of Time to cold Call and brand-new Things like that so it’s Just Been Expanding Slowly but, We are Expanding and Seemed to do a Lot Through Networking but We we concluded an Online Market that Carries our Oil and it Started unusually Slow There We sold you know? We i think we Started in March of? 2013 We might Install the case in Two Months? If that it intended even Even Three or four[ Months] it made Forever and then I’ll send it to God and now We’re Settling we’ve Sold like one Time right Around Christmas We sold the dispute in A week and this online Market So it’s that’s Been A real good liquor for our Sales We last-place Summer did The Grand Rapids Farmers Market Originally We Talked About make it but Farmers Business Are Hard To do how Many of you done Farmers Groceries A got a couple of you It Makes A Lot of Work and it Makes A parcel of Time Commitment We didn’t we Committed to one of the Days last Summer was Thursday Afternoons and? We Committed to that and We did it all summer Long and Good Experience But We Decided it’s Probably not the best use of our Time for our Product so And we now are looking to offering big Sizes was Working Looking at? “ve got something” With Restaurants Offering Gallon Sizes and Actually Just This Month Started With A company in Grand Rapids announced west Michigan Farm Link and It it Connects Farmers to Producers and So, we just sold our First two gallons This past week to Through farm length it connects Farmers to? Purchasers on Eateries and Retailers And so right now we’re doing Ourselves restraint retail I “ve got a lot” of People I is a well-known fact that Buy from you Regularly Yankee I Keep A event at my role and I have People Coming to the counter and They’ll Say I want to buy some Canola oil and we’re at government off And it’s like, oh? Everybody Knows it’s and Bonnie’s Office okay and so okay, so bowl six, was to select a farmers Market to test the retailing the Product, We were supposed to do this in 2011, We Didn’t get to it that time, We simply Didn’t and We weren’t Ready? 2012, We were Busy I an Election to run in Two thousand Five min Timeship Clerk and I’m trying to do a farmers Market and My son lives in Chicago and he Asked if he Could sell it in One of the Chicago Farmers Market We retail it Now We Rape Retailed in Grand Rapids at eight Dollars a Bottle He was coming Fifteen Dollars a, Bottle for it in Chicago and he, was selling a lot This, was dan and this is the Farmers Market and Grand Rapids if you Ever Get up to grand Rapids it’s a greater his Downtown market So nice Little Farmers Market than they have Noone to a market no to so[ that] we did That in 2013 my son got Married and Decided That’s he’s Too busy so um Gold seven was to Working in collaboration with Farmers to get for Farmers to grow Omega9 Canola in 2011 That was A objective that Was in The grant I’m Gonna Let dan Talk about that one a little bit Wow there’s Really not much to Say I kind of Said it you know We’re Still the only Person but She Could Really Grow a look at all as Though It was A good aim but, We will be unable to get Farmers to? Cook at all so Yeah and I[ visualize] the Reason was and it’s what you Guys Told me was because they? Could Get much more Money With Soybeans and Corn in our Area then they, couldn’t pin all up So a lot of them Merely weren’t is Perpetrated to it Where are you Now Actually to Starting with, We started out even Thinking in Terms of that I would Divulge her at resell it for them They Didn’t like That Idea Because.I was going to Take a Commission for Handling Their Cannoli I really get it on for free liberty Wow Well We we checked Most of our Canola Anyway Because? We Can even Press all our Own you know? We’re Going to grow Probably in Excess of 200,000 Pounds of Canola this year and we’re Going to press out you know Maybe 12,000 Pounds or something Ok, cool aight was to Develop and Maintain a Website to promote Canola Oil and to inform the public of Health Benefits and Disseminate Information to Farmers who, May wish to Grow it so One of The large-scale You Only Happen to have a Connection from, dan’s onetime Business a person that did Websites and We have our Website Is? Set down With Him and you are aware, We were Going to BB& B Farms or something like that on our Website he Says , no no? When it travel People start Searching you require the Name Canola and Pop up first so we did We Ended up with Canola Oil Make Com and it’s been Good I mean When I look for every Once in a while I google Myself If You Guys Have a Website I’m Sure you know you Shiz Google Yourself and See what Comes up the search Engines And it Typically Comes up near the Top so I don’t know if That’s Because I have Cookies Still on my Computer[ That] Bring it Up but You Know Try it Sometime You little Canola Oil and See if Iris Pops Up but We have? Now See if We can do this I Click on the Link Should bring it up Okay so this is our Website and We have up on the top you’ll See we’ve got? Canola Research Canola Commodity Canola Blog Contact Us and about Us So I do have to confess I don’t[ throw] as much Attention as I should My purpose this Year Was to put at least one Blog up? Every I three Essays A week or a Month and I never I just, don’t seem to be able to do that The One Part I do tend to go do the most is Canola Produce this kind of light-headed Oh this is A recreation one Is Recipes A mas of People like Recipes and so we’ve Come up with some recipes that We used only for our Canola oil and That People Like and you Can lead Them to our wrestler to our Website[ if] You Guys Like how Many Putin’s and See I have all these locates that are Pending so I am Coming soon I have to work on but this is a Kiedy Bread is A big hit So if You don’t know what to do With your extra Zucchini but that Canola oil Protons are Simply Incredible and They’re so Easy to Make so but you can go to So if You’re going to do something at you are aware, we get a lot of Slam on your Website Until Research We have So it Talks a little bit About Growing Canola Plants Detailed Information I’m going to nola can be Found here so you can go to this link and yet you are aware Information I don’t know, oh okay Sorry go, Read I hope it’s okay if I abide it so here’s like I hand out that, We set[ on] There that has This isn’t my Computer so Anyway You get the Idea we’ve got A fortune[ of] Information on your Q powered Interested in like So i’m gonna get off our Website There’s also a place on There that you Different With Different attaches and So most of the Information I Use and Growing Canola Comes from the Canola Council of Canada Great Information on All the how to’s you know Pest Control and Planting and all of that Answer of The United Country Canola, Association that’s A good Resource There’s A Northern Canola Growers Association on a North Dakota it’s a good resource so He was Actually Originating There’s A quantity of Resource? One of the things that you are aware I’ve Heard again A, duet Times Today. Is that raise that People that are Buying your Product You know, they was necessary to get to know the farmer They Want A face to keep with the produce and so the Website, was a good way, to do So Another Way to Disseminate the Information Learned Which was Gold 9 Was Obviously Through our Website We have Flyer We do have some I’ll cause dan Pass These out We’ve had A duet and We were Printing some creepy to bring in our Printer loped out of Ink and So i think we’ve got two of our Better ones That, we? Extremely yeah But We obtained That Flyers Especially When? We are currently under the Farmers market Or when we’re doing some trying to do some market it’s nice to have some our? Flyer for People to Take with Them Press Release We’ve we had A marry little Hometown tight Newspapers do Some? Articles On us specially the Area Where, we’re Growing the Canola? so you know that helps and Presentations Now We are We’ve done A marry Different Education? Since We’ve got this Ramp Basically? and Networking I review That’s one of the Best Ways that we’ve Found brand-new Customers is Through other Farmers other? Creators That Are drawing Makes That Connect us like they Say, oh We have our Product in like One of Those Store Where it’s Called under the vines and One of our Guys, We met at the Conference Said oh I have my produce in under The Vines I’m going to tell her About you and then You can get your Product in There and that’s how We get our Product in A much of Different Places? so get to know People and you Know Try to Work Together and Help each other it Actually Does Pay And that’s Kind of rises Along with the relations with other marketers and Producers that We had We have some Articles that have Been Done We had A recent one Gun that Is Mission Langley’s Institute and It’S an Article Tasting the neighbourhood Difference and This was in Their Newsletter and it Talks About Us if We have Time at the end Which I’m not Sure We will There’s A video that fair did on Us that’s From the Video and We can? Play that at the end if We have Time but This This Is an Article that, was written about us Picture of our farm She repented Voyel And then This one out to all of Their the people that do Their Newsletters so it’s a.Way to get our? Get your Name out so I think we connected Them the Membership? Was like Twenty Dollars and We getting A mas of A spate of People in Just in[ our] Oil from that Twenty Dollars, well spent? Chance Later We’ll Play[ that] Video okay? recent attainments Did I have you Nothing Like This One Yeah what you’ve Seen so far was kind of during the the Project the actual momma Sarah Project so that Ended in March Two Thousand Thirteen and since Then One of the things We Found out About exercising an Incubator Kitchen? Is it’s a heck of A mint Org the Bank of Canola Seed haul it over There Press up the Oil then Haul the oil in the Canola meal back again And so after About six Months of doing that, We said We got to Figure it out an Easier Way? We’re Ever Going to grow Beyond you know A few Bottles in olive Oil and so we Begin Planning for our Own on raise? Commercial Kitchen and That With The Michigan Department of Agriculture[ and] Had Them Come out to our farm and went to everything with them and get You know, Initial travel Ahead yeah go ahead if You do it you know According to our our our? Guidelines[ While] I will Approve you and we did that so Precisely About Exactly A time Ago last Februari We got licensed for our Own on raise Commercial Kitchens and Now We press our Oil Around the farm? This Past Summer, Well using Those One Cunto containers Which is[ a] immense action to place the Small Quantity of Canola Seed we? Were applying as long as it was a small Quantity but last-place Year We had to Keep six of Those Back That Becomes Really Unwieldy to Try and Mean You got to Keep it Rodent Proof and you got to keep it a accumulation on the right Situations and Everything so,[ We] put up a brand-new speck bin this year Just for our Food point Canola Seed that, we’re Going to press out We proselytized one of our Old Buildings on the Farm for A seed Cleaning House so now? We Can click Cleaner Seed right There We went One Place that that happens? We’re Looking at going to gallon Container Because, we Gotta get A? Bill Beyond The Pint Bottle that you, saw you know it’s Time too small for any Kind of Volume Use working A gallon of Five Gallon Containers And we’re Now Just Beginning? We improved This Kitchen on the Farm you know it was a nice Little Kitchen a charming Little Thing I acts Wonderful but you know what Already we’re Open Elbows with one another when, we’re not Working Together so now we’re Just Starting to lay out Plans to expand that in Convert Another one of the outbuildings Into Michigan Department of Agriculture Licensed Kitchen On a bigger Scale So it’s Easier to Handle the Sea is Easier to Handle the snack it’s Easier to Handle the Oil and so, oh We’ve[ been] Able to make the Project you know and Just Continue Slowly you know Frustrating Sometimes but Keep Building it and So that’s kind of our Model for the future now[ Yeah] Press, we’re Still using a little Press Actually That Little Press I passed the Estimates off That little Press but do all of the Canola we Grow if I lead A? 24 7 for About 48 Weeks of the Year So, we’re Going to Keep you There for quite a.While more you know Well This[ is] Just a depict[ Showing] That When? We firstly Start Putting Together the Kitchen? I was looking for Pictures for this Presentation And i’m like I can’t believe I did not Take A pile of Pictures of the Kitchen so but then We do Have a little Video to show you that will show you a little More We don’t even Have our sink Faucets on I believe this is the one That has the Video So this is dan Operating across and his cute Little Bonnet that’s a heater We had some[ Parties] to marry so that’s why, You are? I warm it for About 57 for a heater Or what the nozzle With Worms a seed Just to get it Started, one Side you started “youre seeing” it Makes it off so start Up, well I[ Advance][ Or][ so] with That Make Sure it’s Cleaned out So I[ smell][ oh] actually, well[ so] “when youre doing” that p.m. After you’ve Collected the petroleum Just Take you up, over There it’s Just You Can Use in your James up or a chainsaw Chain Bringing Down Food Let’s Slide This Barrel it was not Something, too actually puts Inside This Big Barrel Up here That’s Where you framed our Canola in now so we can get? You know What eight Hours[ of] Running yeah Instead of Taking A Cup Boring in Any Month Video Journalists Are so, We Should be heated Up in here so? It’s just Working on Speed Process the Oil This Should Start I’m finished the Coil two seasons now terribly Good With The meal live Sat Feed About Thirty Four Percent Protein Go to get high Protein and We don’t get all the oil out of the meal so the snacks got Me About twenty Percent fat Content so it’s a real rich Feed Vibration in There Someone Turn the Speed up Justin Here Certain Speed Slower Vacuuming Okay, that we stopped There but? As After its Collected in A little Container Then, We hook it up to a little? Fuck Young Pale that it runs Into and you Made Some a little Device so it runs from There and collects it to the Pale So it’s five Gallons so you merely Truly have to empty it about every Five Hours as it creates Body out an Hour And the Press Works it’s got its went Just a shaft Auger in There in A pressure Plate and it pushes that Seed against the pressure Plate and so it’s a Combination of Heat and Pressure It erupts the Cell Cell walls in the Canola seed They’re About FortyThree FortyFour Percent Oils a pretty high-pitched lubricant Content First the cell walls and then the oil Comes out as you construed it[ and] the banquet Disappears right On on Through a, tiny market Center Now and We use the oil Press for Canola but We’ve had had We exerted it for Soybeans We had some Problems with the Cross at first it Didn’t like Canola It wanted to Press Soybeans so we actually have A friend and Grew Soy nuts so I went soy beans from him Just to run Because a guy that We bought the Press room and Kept Saying? Well run Soy balls to It’ll get you know Work Itself and get it going so the press Starts Functioning Which Should So, we moved a assortment of Soy nuts Through it at Times to Scour it and Anyway so for a while so we run Soy Bean Through and Collected some Soybean Oil I know you can use it for any Is It Mostly for Seeds you think if You use[ it] or not so Yeah so you can use[ it] for you know what we’re doing you can do With your girlfriend I have A nut Proper Or a Different kind of the Seed Crop I Made Sure I don’t know you know Because you’ve got, so much set up for Canola See but I kind of like to try Pumpkin See Through it Time to see what that method it Would Smack Because Some People in our Area of A rapid Million in the Pumpkin Syria Without five Minutes, okay Auctions and Marketing I guess I has spoken about A bunch of this We got in A bunch of Specialty Store and from that First Conference You know it was like Smaller collects They weren’t Buying A fortune from Us We’re Working now and get Into some retail Grocery Storage and Some Diners We do have one Restaurant that by a good deal of Oil from us it uses it for simply About everything There imploring to get Michigan Products I ponder What’s Happening here is everybody wants Ohio products to your neighbourhood Name on Ohio In Michigan everybody wants michigan concoctions so, we’re Getting Into A slew of Region That require Michigan Products We’ve Got the online Store I told you about the[ Buyers] Market? Firmly and There were A few marketers that were at the Farmers Market That Were Running on Community Supported Agriculture and They Wanted our Oil for Their Patron so, We did sell meat Which Involves to me Readings Learned Be flexible as “youre seeing” our Goals A quantity of Times were Changed and Sarah Was fine With that I represent here’s our Idea Here’s what? We got the grant for We Ended Up[ doing] the final what the hell is did? Was what The grant Said We were going to do you only did it[ in] A Different Way? We originally Look for Somebody Else to press the petroleum for Us that Didn’t Work so, we intent up Buying our Own Press? You know, We went to Different kinds of Miles so you are aware, we had to Have that Flexibility? you Know Everything expenditures More You think it’s gonna Really Precisely payment more at all there is to it Everything Takes longer Than You Think it’s gonna it’s Just the way it did it Seems[ very] big At Number Four Vision and Persistence I think of everything, we did the most important thing[ We] had was Persistence you know Every Problem We had We[ Only] Managed to Overcome Sometimes? We Didn’t know how? And and I know There was at least one Psycho, Bonnie I’m done This is it I’ve Had[ it] your, Honor went home from Pressing at the Commercial Kitchen in Heart Which was Probably an Hour half Where we lived? It was snowing so Roser Cruddy and? If We had Been Up There for like eight Hours and got one Gallon of Oil the Press, did not want to cooperate at all that day it was Really so Frustrated he Said I’m done Pendants and So he was Driving I had note Pad of Paper I said, okay? Let’s go Through this you know and We simply registered everything there is We could Contemplate of to Fix This Problem and? We You know, We precisely because i miss, We Can’t stop Every Time I belief We Should stop he’d Say? No, We[ can’t] Every Time he Thought? We could stop you know I’d Say no you are eligible to so? We exactly Brainstorm Everything We are also able Think of On the? Way Home We Didn’t? We travelled Through Necklace and Try and we? Ended Up working so you Know There was a time We guessed, we were Going to it I even Give the[ Coretta] Oil and Press on? Craigslist that’s how man We were at it, we were Going to Buy, one of Those German crisscross We were Actually gaping Into Those i listed on Craigslist to see if[ I] could get Anything for it Nobody Wanted to Pay you know, We Paid like eight Thousand Dollars for it Knew I would we thought? Well we’ll Take a little less Nobody Wanted Pay More than about the registers Employments like Forget it so You know, We still have it We think it Found out We were Croaking to get Rid of It and Started Working The Only Theory That Seems to Work so as it is with life I think it is what Business you know Persistence of The Name of the Game Just Just stick With that you Can Stay in There if it’s Worth Doing Anyway you know I necessitate Something you, do give Up on life but you know but We’re doing you really stick with it and Keep going[ I] can Make A couple of Closing Comments of Have any more Questions they Take Them I think That There Were Two Keys to our are getting that Sare grant And this is me ok it’s not Alan Talking, one was We Had exceedingly highly Specific measurable? But it nine of them you can see what they were They were ClearCut They disappeared right Down The line okay and I imagine the reviewers like Those the other, was is we got? Two or Three what I consider Early Dynamite symbols of Recommendation, one was from an Issue okay and A got a couple of other People Who Had Credibility you know and We close Those with our? Application and I believe Those Really Helped Us get it so if you’re Looking in Terms of A sare concession Think About Those Couple of Ideas Amazed and That One Closing Thought I am you remember I expected dan I was How much of 1,500 Pounds was and he Said About 40 bushels so we started out our goal was to Press and? Bottle 40 Bushels Which is About 80 Gallons Actually it’s Dirty Book Shows, oh Really Did I Say your, Honor did you Say Wrong, well Anyway 30 Questions so that was About So it’s about 660 Gallons so Countless, May be fun from 60 Gallons to Hopefully this year Doing our goal Is Time he Took Some 600 Gallons sorry Anyway but I’m Just trying to Say is We in Three Years we’ve Really? Grown As far as what, We can do in what We do sell because? We don’t Produce any More Than Himself so I see you Didn’t Say much about the Cake because I gazed in What Time Can Return on the Cake this is good if Not Better Than before Except[ for] Omega Oils SMaller yes Yes as, One Weakness With our Business right Now is we’re Really not doing much with the Cake In fact you know, it’s a good Livestock Feed I’m so far contributed Most of it apart of People you know We had Small Quantities and Stuff and I haven’t Truly Gone Out and Trying to solve so i mean I had[ Paid] for the? Shooters so you know what Great so great It’s pretty[ Touched] Oh so i necessitate Meals like 450 a ton now it’s it’s out of sight yeah so you figured six Percent of That Product Is to be A case yeah about seventy Percent Because We leave About ten Percent oil in the Cake so yeah Gasp out of[ 30][ 70][ Ready] soon and if You do your? Analysis Of it you have to sell Houses As far as a little bit of[ Andalus][ to] the[ us] that You “re going to have to” prep it any x, well you have to have to Get to cook you are aware Yeah I haven’t met Any Analysis? It’s it I’ve Just I’ve Done an Analysis on the snack but not swine perceptive Anything like that but Yeah that’s A good Moment you Know I think you want this yes Nation Model? you you
